FOURTH-YEAR ELECTIVES

IMPORTANT REQUIREMENTS

All students interested in our electives must first get written approval from the Predoctoral Coordinator:

Ms. Ramona Velazquez
Electives Coordinator
Center for Family and Community Medicine
100 Haven Avenue, 27C
New York, NY 10032
(212) 304-7421
(212) 544-1938 [fax]
rav9005@nyp.org

All electives are 4 weeks in length at a minimum. The student must commit to all four weeks. We do not offer electives that are less than 4 weeks in duration.

Fourth year medical students are allowed up to 3 days off during the elective to attend residency interviews.  Because our electives involve coordinating many faculty, residents, and multidisciplinary staff schedules in order to craft a quality experience, students should inform the predoctoral administrator and course director as soon as possible of any days that they need to be dismissed (preferably before the student begins the elective).

If a medical student needs to cancel an approved elective, we request notification as soon as possible in order to make the spot available to another student.

All students interested in our electives must also complete all requirements for the Columbia P&S Office of Student Affairs:

  1. P&S student requirements
  2. Visiting U.S. and Canada student requirements
  3. International (non-U.S. or Canada) student requirements

At the present time, we offer the following fourth year medical student electives:

  1. Advanced Ambulatory Family Medicine
  2. Family Medicine Inpatient Sub-internship
  3. Family Medicine Research Elective
  4. Students interested in our electives should first review the " important requirements for fourth year electives."
